The annual cole crop field day took place today at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Hastings Research and Demonstration Site. Gary England, UF/IFAS regional specialized Extension agent and director of the Hastings Agricultural Extension Center, hosts this event every year to inform growers on the latest research findings for cole crops.
Despite the chilly weather, the field day drew a good number of growers and Extension agents from around the state. England told attendees he was appreciative of the turnout considering the weather conditions.
England led a tour through the research plots at the center, where researchers discussed their ongoing projects. Field presentation topics included weed management in cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower variety trials, advanced cabbage production and a brief discussion about diamondback moth management.
After the field tour, attendees were welcomed inside to hear a presentation on new alternative crops on the minds of Hastings Extension agents. Some of the alternative crops mentioned were, sweet potatoes, sweet corn and artichoke.
The field day is a great yearly event for cole crop growers and statewide Extension agents to connect with the Extension agents at the Hastings center, as well as be involved in their ongoing research projects.
