Florida specialty crop producers are encouraged to register now for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certified Soil Fumigant Applicator Training workshop, scheduled for Thursday, July 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hendry County Extension office in LaBelle, Florida.

Soil Fumigant Applicator Training

In order for an applicator to utilize fumigants, they must have a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services private applicator license and complete the EPA Certified Soil Fumigant Applicator Training for each active ingredient that will be used.

An applicator can also have an FDACS commercial applicator license, but they must have the Soil and Greenhouse Fumigation add-on, as well as must complete the EPA Certified Soil Fumigant Applicator Training for each active ingredient that will be used.

The required EPA Certified Soil Fumigant Applicator Training must be renewed every three years.

The training will include modules for the most commonly used fumigants in Florida. These include chloropicrin, pic/telone blend and metam sodium/potassium. This is an in-person class in lieu of the optional online version. A pesticide application license must be obtained prior to this training.

Contact Craig Frey at craigfrey@ufl.edu for additional information about this training or how to obtain a pesticide license.

The deadline to register is Friday, July 8.
