New Weather Tool in the Works

Rick Lusher, project manager for the Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN), discusses a new weather tool that is currently being tested to aid growers.

“We’re testing a chill accumulation tool that takes into account heating and cooling,” says Lusher.

According to Lusher, the tool is currently in the very early stages of testing and development. Researchers are working on calculations based on grower recommendations and inputs.

“It’s like chill hours, but it takes into account the warming as well to give … a net chill. In terms of new development, that is what we are testing right now,” says Lusher.

This tool would aid specialty crop growers with temperature changes.
