New Programs for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

David Bridges, president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Georgia, recently attended Georgia Agribusiness Council’s (GAC) annual supper. He spoke with AgNet Media about ABAC’s newest programs and the college’s relationship with GAC.

ABAC launched a new strategic plan this summer. The plan focuses on encouraging academic excellence and helping students graduate on time with minimal debt. It also engages students in internships and undergraduate research studies. The main purpose of the plan is to prepare students for the workplace by giving them real-life experience.

ABAC is also working on implementing new academic majors. Bridges mentioned creating an agricultural education major for undergrads, as well as making agriculture communications a major. Currently, agriculture communications is a track within ABAC’s writing and communications program.

Bridges also discussed ABAC’s consolidation efforts with Bainbridge State College. He says ABAC will be taking responsibility of the college sometime next year. He said that consolidating with Bainbridge State College is less about adding to ABAC’s academic program list and more about expanding ABAC’s footprint in Georgia.

ABAC is a corporate sponsor member of GAC. It supports all of GAC’s functions, and ABAC involves GAC in all of its activities. GAC helps place students in jobs and internships. “Of course, they’re a strong advocate for the agricultural agenda with the General Assembly, which is really important to us,” Bridges said. He believes partnering with GAC helps ABAC fulfill its mission of creating the next generation of leaders in agriculture.
