The 28th annual Florida Post-Harvest Horticulture Tour will take place March 6–10, 2017.
The University of Florida (UF) post-harvest program is designed for produce industry professionals, researchers and students involved in all aspects of the produce industry from field to retail. “We are interested in how fresh quality is maintained from the point of harvest through handling and wholesale- and retail-level distribution,” says Steven Sargent, UF professor of horticulture and coordinator of the post-harvest program. “This is an overview of what we hope to see on the tour.”
Starting in Gainesville, the tour group will travel throughout Florida, visiting large and small commercial operations to view harvesting methods, new technologies and grocery distribution centers. Sargent says the tour typically has approximately 30 participants from a diversity of backgrounds. Participants engage in learning through hands-on experiences, discussion on the latest technologies, and a behind-the-scenes look into the real-world application of management techniques.
