BELLE GLADE, Fla. – Following Florida Governor Rick Scott’s visit to the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), leaders from communities south of Lake Okeechobee expressed gratitude for the governor’s leadership and urged him to continue advocating for the region. The following community and business leaders released statements immediately following Scott’s visit to Belle Glade:

Stephen Basore, of TKM Bengard Farm LLC, said, “As a generational Glades area vegetable farmer, farming families like mine have been a part of a decades-long, collaborative process to restore the Everglades system holistically. Today we had a productive discussion with Governor Scott and shared our view on the importance of funding and completing key CERP (Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) projects and problems at their source north of Lake Okeechobee.”

Stewart Stein, of Stewart Stein Farms, said, “EAA Farmers continue to be part of the southern Everglades solution, achieving a 70 percent phosphorus reduction in water year 2017, nearly three times better than the goal. We are part of the water-quality-treatment process that delivers clean water to the Everglades, but it is necessary for lawmakers in Tallahassee to address nutrient-rich inflows at their source north of Lake Okeechobee.”
