The workshop will be lead by researchers from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Everglades Research and Education Center.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., middle school and high school teachers are invited to attend the free workshop held at the UF/IFAS Everglades Research and Education Center, 3200 East Canal Street, Belle Glade, Florida.

In-service points for professional development will be awarded by school districts through Master Inservice Plans (MIP).

Richard Raid, a professor of plant pathology and the workshop organizer, says that, “The workshop is designed to familiarize primarily middle school and high school teachers with plant production, specifically diseases and how they affect plant production.”

Raid says that topics for the work shop include: pathogens that attack plants, how the pathogens are related to humans and animals, ways they infect plants, and how the pathogens affect plant yield.

Florida is home to the most invasive species in the country, and many travel in to the state via plants, Raid explained.

“The primary goal is to get science teachers excited so they can get their students excited about real-world circumstances,” said Raid, “It’s important that teachers make things fun.”

Raid explained that the workshop is designed to incorporate plant pathology  into the STEM lessons. “One of the biggest features is that it lends relevance to science. Students can learn how science, mathematics, and chemistry are all woven together. This workshop provides real-life examples of how they are interwoven,” said Raid.
