The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) publication “Keeping Bees in Florida,” reports “There are over 4,000 registered beekeepers in the state of Florida (as of June 2016). Nearly three quarters of these are considered ‘backyard’ beekeepers (0–10 colonies), while the remaining quarter are ‘sideline commercial’ or ‘commercial’ beekeepers (11–200 and 200+ colonies, respectively). In total there are over 440,000 managed colonies in the state…”
If you are one of the many beekeepers in Florida, or have an interest in becoming a beekeeper, make plans to attend the 6th annual Beekeeping in the Panhandle Workshop and Trade Show.
The Beekeeping in the Panhandle Working Group has once again teamed up to offer the 2017 Beekeeping in the Panhandle Workshop and Trade Show on at the Washington County Agriculture Center, 1424 Jackson Avenue, Chipley, FL 32428. The activities will take place April 21-22 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Central each day and will include lunch.
This year’s event features six hands-on, open hive experiences; presentations on the latest research-based beekeeping management practices; interaction with expert beekeepers; vendors with beekeeping equipment and hive products; honey tasting and information on local beekeeping clubs. Door prizes include a daily grand prize of a 10-frame bee hive!
The early registration fee for the event is $30 for one day, or $50 for both days per person over 12, and $10 per day for children 12 and under by April 7. Add an additional $10 per person after April 7, or for payment at the door the day of the event.
