Alabama Extension reminds specialty crop producers that the Mobile County Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association annual meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Jon Archer Ag Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Preregistration is required by calling the Mobile County Extension Office at 251-574-8445.

Jacob Kelley, Regional Extension agent in Southwest Alabama, said the meeting will cover various topics that all producers might be interested in.

“We’re trying to cover as many areas as we can. Hopefully, it’ll get bigger as we continue to do it and add more commodities,” Kelley said.

The meeting will highlight pecans, citrus canker disease, insecticide updates for vegetable crops and updates from the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

“It’s not really a down time, it’s a planning phase for a lot of our growers. They’re getting ready to get plants in the ground, get seeds started and order seeds if they haven’t already done that, especially the vegetable growers. A lot of my fruit guys, outside of strawberries, they’re getting ready to start pruning and getting everything ready to start blooming and hopefully fruit set in the spring,” Kelley said.

“We’re just trying to get everybody excited, geared up and into the right mindset for the spring that’s coming up.”
