An onion eating contest, arts and crafts, shopping, an air show, carnival rides, cooking events and more can all be found at the 40th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival on April 27-30, 2017!
The festival is held in the heart of the city of Vidalia, Georgia. Alexa Carter Britton, executive director of the Vidalia Convention and Visitors Bureau, says that the city of Vidalia is part of the 20-county growing region for Vidalia onions.
Growers play a key role in the festival. “The growers are always very good about sponsoring the festival. Several farmers even have farm stands and will attend every day of the festival,” Britton says.
The festival is a celebration of the harvest that the growers have worked very long, diligent hours toward. The event is also a great opportunity to educate the general public about the onions and their agricultural life cycle. “We, as a festival and a community, want to bring awareness of the onion to as many people as possible,” says Britton.
On the drive to the festival, attendees should be sure to look out their windows to get a glimpse of the famous Vidalia onions planted to the left and right of the roads.
