Cole crop growers are invited to learn more about the crops and current research at the 2017 Cole Crop Field Day. The event will be held at the Cowpen Branch Road Demonstration and Research Farm, Dec. 13 at 8:30 a.m.

University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science’s (UF/IFAS) Hastings Agricultural Extension Center is hosting the event.

Gary England, UF/IFAS regional specialized Extension agent and director of the Hastings Agricultural Extension Center, said researchers will speak about their findings and research initiatives.

The field day is a tour of the Cowpen Branch Road Demonstration and Research Farm, with stops at each of the areas. England said the farm is a nearly 50-acre plot providing land for research on crop production.

Cabbage is the second most prominent crop in the Hastings area, so a lot of the research is focused on that crop, England said.

Research for broccoli and other crops will also be presented. The research discussions will include how different varieties can be more successful in different areas of the United States. Growers will learn which variety they can grow in their area to benefit them the most.

Various areas of research, such as weed science, breeding, insecticides and cover crops will be discussed. Demonstrations will also occur during the field day, which will examine things such as mulch, irrigation systems and plant density.
